When looking for and ordering a tarp one of the main features you are probably looking at besides the type of material is the size. Your have things to cover or areas to protect. Dimensions are extremely important for many applications. The tarp industry has two basic classifications of sizing, which can often be confusing. We will try to clarify the size designation of Tarps: Cut Size versus Finish Size.
Knowing the difference can help ensure that you are ordering the proper size. To follow are explanations for the two classifications (Cut Size and Finish Size):
Cut Size
This is the classification of tarp size that can be puzzling to consumers. A Cut Size tarp describes the starting material size, the pattern dimensions, before hems and/or seams are created. After the sewing procedures, the actual tarp size depending on the product can be anywhere from four to eight inches shorter in both the length and width directions. So, a one and half-inch hem is going to require three or six inches as it folded once or twice in its hem creation depending on the product. An example is that a 10’ X 20’ Cut Size tarp is actually going to be approximately 9’-6†X 19’-6â€.
A reason for the described Cut Size tarps designation is the material that these are made from typically come from stock fabric widths that are provided in 48-inches, 60-inches, 72-inches, or 96-inche rolls. The products that are Cut Size are more of the larger production runs where the time saved in this process is passed along in the lower prices of these tarp products.
Finish Size
The more logical classification in the tarp industry is the Finish Size tarp. The size shown and received is the same, actual size even after the hem sewing process of making the covers. There is more material utilized in the manufacturing to get to the finished size requiring additional labor as well in the overall procedures. For this designation, a 10’ X 20’ tarp is going to be 10’ X 20’.
